Gas Lift Bed Won’t Close? Here’s How to Use and Fix It Properly

Having trouble pushing down your gas lift bed? Wondering if it’s time to replace the struts? Don’t stress - gas lift (or hydraulic) struts play a crucial role in supporting and cushioning your bed when opening and closing it. If your bed isn’t closing properly, it’s not always a sign that something’s broken. Here are three common reasons your gas lift bed won’t go down, and what to do about it.

How to use and fix gas lift bed that won't close

1. You’re Using the Wrong Technique

More often than not, the issue comes down to incorrect use - not a faulty strut. Here’s how to properly close a gas lift bed in three steps:

  1. Check that the mattress is on: Gas lift beds are designed to close with the mattress in place. If there’s no mattress or heavy load on top, it may be too light to push down effectively.
  2. Use both hands in the centre: Place your hands at the middle of the bed frame when pushing down to apply even pressure. This helps prevent twisting or damage to the lift system over time.
  3. Guide it down gently: When the bed reaches the bottom, the struts can release quickly. Don’t let go and keep your hands on the frame and lower it slowly to avoid a sudden drop.

2. The Gas Struts Don’t Match the Mattress Weight

If the struts are too powerful for your mattress (or not strong enough), you’ll run into issues when trying to close or lift the bed. As a guide:

Here’s a general guide for front gas lift beds:

  • Single or K/Single mattress usually suits struts rated at around 100-115 kg.
  • Double mattress works well with 120-150 kg struts.
  • Queen mattress typically needs 150-160 kg struts.
  • King mattress may require 160–200 kg struts.

Note: These are only rough guidelines. Mattress weight can vary a lot depending on the materials - pocket spring mattresses are heavier than foam, for example - so always check with your bed supplier for the recommended strut pressure.

Also, these numbers apply to Front Lift gas lift beds. Side opening gas lift beds often use different strut angles and mechanics, which means the required pressure might vary. Always follow the bed manufacturer’s specifications when replacing gas lift struts.

3. The Gas Struts Are Worn Out and Need Replacing

If you’ve been using your bed for years and it suddenly stops working as expected, the struts may simply be worn out. While a well-maintained gas lift can last over 10 years, age and use do take a toll.

Time to replace the gas struts if you notice:

  • The bed no longer lifts the mattress all the way up.
  • There’s oil leaking from the struts (a small amount is normal for lubrication - but not puddles).
  • The bed won’t stay up or closes immediately after lifting.

What to Watch Out for When Replacing Gas Struts

  • Match the length: Make sure your replacement struts are the same length as the originals. If not, go for slightly shorter (they’ll lift a bit lower but still work). Avoid struts that are too long—they can prevent the bed from closing fully.
  • Get the right pressure rating (kg): Heavier mattresses need stronger struts. Choosing the correct poundage ensures the bed opens and closes smoothly and safely.
  • Install them the right way: The thicker end of the gas strut should face upward during installation for best performance.

Final Thoughts

A gas lift bed is a brilliant way to maximise bedroom storage - but only if it works the way it should. If you’re struggling to push your bed down, start by checking your usage method, then consider the strut strength or whether it’s time for a replacement.
